The European Union enacted REACH, short for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals, on June 1, 2007 (EC 1907/2006). Designed to foster greater transparency and responsibility on the part of chemicals manufacturers and handlers, REACH requires both manufacturers and importers to gather safety information on the properties of their chemical substances.

By 2018, approximately 30,000 substances have to be registered. The goal of REACH is to enhance the protection of the people working with chemicals, final consumers and the environment. This goal fully aligns with Evonik Industries’ fundamental principles on product stewardship and responsible care. Evonik has actively supported the legislative process to keep REACH practical, and we feel an obligation to our customers and suppliers to ensure the consistent and cooperative implementation of REACH.

As a non-US publicly traded company, Evonik is not subject to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Section 1502, and consequently we are not obliged to comply with any disclosure requirements of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Nevertheless as a responsible acting company, we are reviewing the possible use of conflict minerals in our supply chain, and in doing so support our customers in meeting their obligations.

Conflict minerals mined in conditions where armed conflict and human rights abuses occur, are commonly one of four minerals: tungsten, tantalum, tin, and gold mined in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo or adjoining countries. We require new suppliers to provide evidence of origin for potential conflict minerals in our pre-qualification process. We have implemented ongoing conflict minerals due diligence to determine if these minerals are bought from suppliers, used in our production processes or contained in our products, and, if necessary, where they originated from. On request, we can provide the most recent Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT) for our tin catalysts and tin containing products.
